In memory of Keely Jade 6.12.07

For us the lives of children and their families is paramount.  This year I met with Debbie and her baby son Theo.  Within weeks of knowing Debbie she spoke of the daughter they lost following a diagnosis of trisomy 18.  They had named her Keely Jade.  As you can imagine this rocked their world. Here at the Children’s Centre their daughter and what they had been through as a family inspired us.  Debbie is one of our parent champions and they are consulted on activities for the Centre.  With the summer fast approaching and activities needed for the children in the local area we decided to organise a fundraising fun day in Keely Jade’s memory to raise awareness of the condition and organisations like yourselves that help families. Coming up with a theme was not difficult as Debbie always thinks of Keely Jade as a butterfly.  So Flitter Flutter Fun day was the end result.

The day centred on a Children’s story written about Keely Jade.  The book started by introducing ‘Flitter’ and her parents Flitt and Flew and the importance of rainbows, which we took from your logo. The day was a huge success with nearly 100 children attending with their parents/carers.  We had lots of activities that looked at butterflies, rainbows and all things magical.  The feedback we received from the day was incredible and we were all so pleased.

All in all the fun day, which was only 3 hours, raised £882.43, which is a true, credit to the community and friends of the Children’s Centre.  The staff at the Children’s Centre, Debbie and her family were so overwhelmed at the generosity of all those that attended.  We all had tears at the end of the day and I know this was one of the most emotional days for Debbie because she was opening up her world and sharing something that was intimate to her and her family.  We all hope that the money we have raised for SOFT UK goes on to benefit families like Debbie’s.  Liz Thurston (Manager)
