John Capper - Chair of the Conference Committee

As chair of the Conference Committee for the May Weekend, John welcomed everyone to the Weekend and talked about what's happened in SOFT UK in the past year.

John Capper was the Chairman of the Conference Committee for the SOFT UK Weekend 2012. To start the day he introduced himself and explained how SOFT has helped after the birth of his son, Jack David, who had trisomy 18.

John then updated everyone on a few of the SOFT UK highlight of the past year:

  • Professor John Carey, one of the world’s foremost medical experts in Trisomy, attended the May 2011 conference.
  • The first SOFT Northern Ireland Family Day was held in August, with representatives from many International SOFT groups including SOFT Italy and SOFT Ireland.
  • Lily Orme, who has mosaic trisomy 18, starred in a short film shown on her local television station to publicise the grant Jeans for Genes gave SOFT UK.
  • The first SOFT UK Volunteer Training Weekend took place in October 2011
  • Professor Joan Morris and Dr Una Macfadyen spoke at the SOFT UK Scotland Family Day.
  • William, who has trisomy 18, and his parents Lizzie and Mark, met David Cameron at Number 10.
  • SOFT UK held its first ever Christmas Card fundraising event, with Amy, who has trisomy 18, dressed as Father Christmas. This raised over £400.
  • Saskia, who has Trisomy 18, celebrated her 20th birthday in February 2012.
  • The SOFT UK Sibling Support booklet, written by Jenny Robbins and funded by Jeans for Genes, was printed in March 2012.
