Liam

Liam 17/10/2009 – 09/11/2009

Liam was diagnosed with Edwards Syndrome (T18) at 15 weeks, we were offered a termination but decided against this and to let Liam choose his path in life. Liam was born 9 weeks early, weighing just over 2lb and fought for all he was worth for 23 precious days before growing his angel wings. This is his story...

When we first found out about Liam our world fell apart. There had been an indication of something sinister at both my scan and the blood tests, so we opted for the CVS test to confirm things. The tests came back positive for full Edwards at 15 weeks. My initial reaction was to terminate, I had read many things about Edwards Syndrome on the internet and the outlook looked very bleak for my son, the doctors were all telling me I should terminate too, no one seemed hopeful. I then discovered a small group of people on Facebook and the SOFT website, and suddenly there was a little hope. I understood that my son had a tiny chance, miniscule even of survival, but however small I was not going to take that away from him.

My pregnancy progressed and I decided to start a blog (which can now be found on here too). I had so many different things happening to me in this pregnancy that I wanted to share that with other mums going through the same thing, my blog grew quite famous in time and soon I had half of the world supporting Liam and I, it was a lovely feeling.

At 31 weeks I went into labour with Liam, I had been warned that I might start early and that labour would be very quick so we rushed straight to the hospital. Liam was born a couple of hours later, weighing just 2lb 2oz, yet he was strong enough to let out three little wails before they intubated him and took him off to NICU.We spent three weeks battling with doctors to give our little man a chance, they wanted to write him off at every turn asking us almost daily to remove his breathing tube and let him go.

On 9th November 2009, at just 23 days old, our beautiful and very brave little man grew his angel wings and joined all his little friends already in Heaven. Those three weeks were the most wonderful, awe inspiring and precious weeks of my entire life and I thank God every day for the moments we got to spend with Liam, the memories we got to make with our beautiful son and the way he opened our eyes to the world.
