Our First Scan

12 weeks

Before I knew it we had made it to 12 weeks and we both were excited when they day of our scan arrived. As I lay on the bed watching the screen I was fascinated by this little tyke on the screen, by this point I was in tears, thankful that my baby had made it this far and hadn't become yet another mc in my long history. Baby didn't seem to be performing well for the measurements, and I had to wiggle my hips and bum in the air to try moving him, but the lazy bones ignored us all, preferring to chill or so I thought at the time. Scan over we headed to the bloods department for my bloods to be taken, I was asked which tests I wanted and replied 'Just do them all, I don't mind'. We were told to book an appointment on the way out for the results, which we did and went merrilly on our way.

I arrived as planned to see the consultant just a few days later, this time I had gone alone, not expecting any problems, it doesn't enter your head at 39, ok I knew I was an older mum but age was still on my side. I was given all my results except the downs one, which strangely had not been forwarded across to the consultant. I was left in a room to stew for ten minutes before he came back with the missing tests, 'I am afraid your bloods have come back high risk for Downs' said the consultant matter of factly, my heart sank, he handed me the paper and I saw the figures. 1:57, 'It'll be your age' he went on, but we can do other tests if you like?' I was bundled out of the room with handful of leaflets and a decision to make. Do I risk a miscarriage after getting this far to find out, or do we just carry on not knowing.

I drove home in a daze.

Liam was diagnosed with Edwards Syndrome (T18) at 15 weeks, we were offered a termination but decided against this and to let Liam choose his path in life. Liam was born 9 weeks early, weighing just over 2lb and fought for all he was worth for 23 precious days before growing his angel wings. This is his story...

This was originally published as a blog during my pregnancy and Liam's short life. I have kept it in its original form as it tells the story so much better than I could now.
