The Awakening

After I had the diagnosis the decision we were now facing was should we terminate the pregnancy. Neither of us wanted to but neither of us wanted to put our little man through any pain. The doctors were very pessimistic and no one I knew had even heard of Edwards so I found myself looking online at people's stories. These stories always seemed to say the same thing, that after carrying their child for 9 months these brave parents got to spend just a few hours with them, if in fact they got any time at all.

One day a friend pointed me towards a support group on Facebook. I joined a couple of groups and read a couple of stories which blew me away. These children were surviving, not a few hours or a few days but years! How could I possibly have thought about terminating this baby? He had fought his way this far and I was not about to give up on him, and although it may sound ridiculous to you, I realised how lucky I was. From that day on I was no longer sad for what should have been, I forgot to say 'why me' every five minutes and began to concentrate on the fact that I was having a beautiful baby we decided to name Liam Jay.

Liam was diagnosed with Edwards Syndrome (T18) at 15 weeks, we were offered a termination but decided against this and to let Liam choose his path in life. Liam was born 9 weeks early, weighing just over 2lb and fought for all he was worth for 23 precious days before growing his angel wings. This is his story...

This was originally published as a blog during my pregnancy and Liam's short life. I have kept it in its original form as it tells the story so much better than I could now.
