SOFT Northern Ireland Family Day 2019

On Saturday 5th October we were delighted to return to Northern Ireland, for the first time in 6 years, to spend the day with our families there.

It has been some time since we have had a Northern Ireland Rep, so our Trustee Liz Egan spent the summer trying to make contact with families in the area.  Huge thanks go to Chloe Jordan, who stepped up to organise the event and to bring all the families together.  The success of the event is largely due to Chloe's hard work and supportive nature.

The main focus for the day was for all the families to meet each other, many for the first time and to talk a bit about what they would like from SOFT UK in Northern Ireland.  The UK team felt really privileged to take part in this meet, as it felt like everyone had known each other forever.  The families were all really friendly and the children played together as if they had all been friends for years. There was an excellent family atmosphere from the start and it was wonderful to hear families' stories.

We were delighted to welcome four young people affected by Trisomy and their families, ranging from 11 months to 18 years old.  It was also great to meet and hear from their siblings.  It was interesting to find out about the services in Northern Ireland and how SOFT UK might be able to work alongside them.

Ten families attended the event, bringing grandparents, friends and lots and lots of children!  Chloe organised some fantastic kids entertainment in the afternoon and the children all started work on the new SOFT Northern Ireland banner, which can hang proudly at future events.

All the families are keen to meet up again in the future. We talked about how we can reach out to other families who may be in the area and also make links to the other regional groups in SOFT UK and also SOFT IRELAND, who have a long history of support families in the Republic of Ireland. We are very much looking forward to coming back very soon and working together to improve support in Northern Ireland.
