Reflections of SOFT UK

As we reflect on the year behind us and look ahead to what’s coming next, we asked members of SOFT UK’s central team to share their thoughts. From standout moments that reminded them why this work matters, to what they’re most looking forward to in the year ahead, each reflection offers a personal insight into the passion, purpose, and people behind SOFT UK.

What is your standout moment of 2025?

Shaun: As this year comes to a close, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most has been being involved in the Change The Narrative campaign. Having the opportunity to visit Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice as part of that work was genuinely unforgettable. Seeing first-hand the compassion, care and expertise within the hospice — and the difference it makes to families — was incredibly moving and reaffirmed just how vital these services are. It’s moments like that which stay with you and remind you why this work matters so deeply.

Paige: Starting at SOFT UK this year has been a real pinch me moment. After more than a decade of volunteering with various charities and six years working in marketing, I feel incredibly grateful to have found a role that brings together something so close to my heart with work I genuinely love. One of my standout moments was attending my very first Family Day. In the lead-up, I was nervous. I’m not a natural public speaker, and I don’t often talk openly about my own loss. But from the moment I arrived, any worry melted away. The families were warm, welcoming, and open in a way that made the space feel genuinely safe. It was an honour to meet the incredible families SOFT works so tirelessly to support.

What are you most looking forward to in 2026?

Shaun: Looking ahead, what I’m most excited about is the start of our Regional Engagement Officer role, beginning with Emma in Northern Ireland. This is a really important step for SOFT UK, allowing us to better support families locally, strengthen connections within communities, and ensure our work reflects the needs of families across the UK. I’m hopeful this role will grow over time, expanding into other nations, and helping us build a stronger, more connected support network for the future.

Paige: Looking ahead to 2026, I’m excited to play a role in raising even more awareness for SOFT UK and for trisomy 13 and 18. Since starting this job, I’ve realised just how little many people know about these conditions and I’m determined to help change that. Awareness shouldn’t only reach families directly affected; it should extend to the wider community, helping build understanding, compassion, and support.
